Current and Former Members of GOD FORBID, ANTHRAX & THY WILL BE DONE form LEAD PIPE CRUELTY
|
Corey Pierce of GOD FORBID reveals that he is teaming up with THY WILL BE DONE vocalist J.Costa, former ANTHRAX vocalist Dan Nelson, ex-THY WILL BE DONE bassist Eric Tavares and long-time friend Rob McElroy to form LEAD PIPE CRUELTY.
“I’m at an incredible point in my life in which I get to do so many creative and fun things.” states Corey. “I am so happy to say that one of these great new chapters is ‘LPC‘ and I’m really excited to play with a bunch of guys who are so supportive and excited to make great music!”
Dan Nelson elaborates on his involvement by stating, “Corey, Rob and myself have been good friends for a while now. We have jammed quite a bit in the past and always talked about having a project together. So I was super stoked when Corey asked me to come on board as the bass player of LPC. Along with J and Eric, it’s a great conglomerate of such talented musicians and awesome human beings, I feel very honored to be a part of that.” Dan asserts, “The vibe between all the guys is super positive, and all involved are eager and excited to create something special together…LPC is gonna be killer.”
“The energy in the room has been nothing short of ethereal.” comments J. Costa. “The chemistry between the five of us is intense and very groove-ladden.”
Corey concludes, “I think after the band I was previously a part of and the music we made, I could not think of a better bunch of guys to get together and create music with. After a couple years of buzzed and up buzzed conversations, and some great idea exchanges with crazy dudes, we will now have some ultimate heavy grooves from LEAD PIPE CRUELTY. LPC!” |
ANTHRAX’s SCOTT IAN Says ‘Vibe Has Been Great’ During Songwriting Sessions For Next Album
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian recently spoke to RollingStone.com about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band’ss follow-up to 2011’s “Worship Music” album.
“Frank [Bello, bass] and Charlie [Benante, drums] came out here to my house and we jumped right in in November,” he said. “Not to jinx anything, but things have been going pretty fast creatively, which normally isn’t the case. We’ve got a ton of material; I’m talking 12 songs now, musically arranged. I’m on my fifth and sixth lyrically, and Charlie sent over ideas for two more songs. He even wrote in an email, ‘Now the really good stuff is coming.’ And I was like, ‘Really? The shit we have right now is pretty fucking killer.’
“This could probably be the first time in this band’s history that we’ll go into the studio with more original material than we need. Normally we have nine or 10 songs then do a bunch of covers, but I can safely say this time, we’ll be recording about 15 of our own songs, if not more, which we’ve never had before.
“The vibe has been great. I think we’re all just happy to be doing it because we came off this great run with ‘Worship Music’, two years, 207 shows, and people all over the planet really love that record. It just afforded us the opportunity to do what we love to do, so we can’t wait to get back in and start.”
Asked when ANTHRAX expects to hit the studio, Ian said: “I’d like to think May, so we can get guitar, drums, bass done before we go to Europe. If we could get that done, live with it for a month, then finish the record in July or August, that’d be the perfect-case scenario, but it depends on if we really feel ready or not.”
Regarding whether guitarist Jonathan Donais (SHADOWS FALL) — who joined ANTHRAX in January 2013 following the departure of Rob Caggiano — has been involved in the creative process so far, Ian told Greece’s Metal Kaoz: “He hasn’t contributed to the songwriting at this point, but he’s writing leads, that’s for sure.”
ANTHRAX was nominated for a “Best Metal Performance” Grammy this year for its cover of AC/DC’s “T.N.T.” The track was featured on ANTHRAX’s eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of the band’s favorite acts from the 1970s. The CD was released in North America on March 19, 2013 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22, 2013 in Europe (Nuclear Blast).
“Worship Music” has sold more than 110,000 copies in the United States since its September 2011 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
ANTHRAX Guitarist SCOTT IAN To Write Memoir For Fall 2014 Release
Da Capo Press, a member of the Perseus Books Group, announced today that it has acquired world rights to publish a book by musician Scott Ian, co-founder of the iconic thrash metal band ANTHRAX, entitled “I’m The Man”. Da Capo executive editor Ben Schafer made the deal with Jim Fitzgerald at the James Fitzgerald Agency.
“Why a book? Because I think my story can connect with anyone and, if I was able to make the life I wanted for myself happen, then anyone can,” Ian says. “I’m really excited to be writing a book because the idea of getting forty-something years of stuff out of my brain and onto the page seems very therapeutic. Plus if I didn’t do it now, I’d start forgetting and wouldn’t be able to share all these killer stories with you, my friends!”
In this fast-paced, humorous, and revealing memoir from the leader of a band that proved to the masses that brutality and fun didn’t have to be mutually exclusive, Ian will tell his life story, starting with his upbringing as a nerdy Jewish boy in Queens, New York, and evolving through his first musical epiphany when he saw THE WHO on television and decided he wanted to play guitar. Not long after, Ian saw KISS at Madison Square Garden and realized what he wanted to do with his life. The book will chronicle his adolescence in a dysfunctional home, his escapism through the turbulent world of heavy metal, and the complete history of ANTHRAX, starting with the band’s formation through the present day reinvigoration with the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, the release of “Worship Music”, and their triumphant performance at Yankee Stadium with the Big Four of thrash: METALLICA, SLAYER, and MEGADETH. The book will also feature eye-popping full-color autobiographical comic book inserts.
For “I’m The Man”, Ian will be working with Jon Wiederhorn, co-author of the books “Louder Than Hell: The Definitive Oral History Of Metal” and “Ministry: The Lost Gospels According To Al Jourgensen”. Wiederhorn is a senior writer at Revolver and a regular contributor to Guitar World, Noisey.com, eMusic.com, and Yahoo Music! He has also worked on staff at Rolling Stone, Guitar, Guitar.com, and MusicPlayer.com.
Ben Schafer, executive editor at Da Capo Press, says: “We’re thrilled to be working with Scott Ian, whose dedication to his legendary band ANTHRAX has assured their place in the pantheon, and whose upbeat nature and sense of humor are infectious.”
ANTHRAX Has Seven New Songs Arranged Musically
According to a post on the official web site of ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello and Ian are “working hard” on material for the next ANTHRAX album. Ian writes: “We’ve had a couple of writing sessions and things are moving along well — fast for us, actually. We’ve got seven songs arranged musically and we’re getting together again in a week and a half.”
He adds: “The new stuff is aggressive, fast, even riffier than the last record and some of it is difficult to play. Nothing like writing parts that are above my ability as a guitar player! When that happens, the drill sergeant in my brain yells, ‘PRACTICE, YOU LAZY FUCK!’ So I do. And I nail that shit.
“I’m just getting into lyrics, songtitles, nothing to talk about yet.”
Benante recently spent time recovering from surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. He rejoined his bandmates for their September 13 performance at “The Battle Of San Bernardino” festival in San Bernardino, California alongside IRON MAIDEN, MEGADETH, TESTAMENT, OVERKILL and SABATON.
The first photo of the new ANTHRAX lineup — featuring the band’s latest addition, guitarist Jon Donais (SHADOWS FALL) — can be seen below (photo by Stephanie Cabral).
Donais has been touring with ANTHRAX since Rob Caggiano‘s departure in January, and will continue to play with ANTHRAX for the foreseeable future.
Speaking to Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio, Ian stated about the band’s current second-guitarist situation: “Jon‘s been with us since February, and I think I can safely say he’s passed the audition… [laughs]. I know we haven’t said anything official yet, but in my mind, he’s the guy. I’m sure some type of official announcement… because in this world, people apparently need that kind of information so they can sleep well at night. But as far as I’m concerned, Jon is the guitar player in ANTHRAX.”
Donais previously stated about playing with ANTHRAX: “I grew up on ANTHRAX, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of the ‘Big Four,’ I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place.”
ANTHRAX‘s latest studio album, “Worship Music”, has sold more than 100,000 copies in the United States since its September 2011 release.
ANTHRAX Begins Writing New Album
ANTHRAX has officially commenced the songwriting process for the band’s next studio album, tentatively due in 2014. Guitarist Scott Ian tweeted this past Saturday: “Today [drummer Charlie Benante] and [bassist Frank Bello] are coming over to start writing for the next record. The few skeletons that are rattling around sound vicious!” Benante recently spent time recovering from surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place.” ANTHRAX’s latest studio album, “Worship Music”, has sold 109,000 copies in the United States since its September 2011 release.
Anthrax Reveal New Guitarist: Jon Donais of Shadows Fall
Last night, during a TeamRock Radio interview, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian made it public that the band’s new guitarist is Shadows Fall axman Jon Donais. Donais has been filling in with Anthrax since Rob Caggiano left the band in January to join Volbeat.
“Jon is a bro and he’s also a total fucking ripper,” Ian said during the interview, which you can hear below. “I’ve worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I’m excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with Anthrax. ’13s gonna be a good year.”
Donais said:
“I grew up on Anthrax, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of the Big Four, I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in.
“Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he’s being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band — Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed — who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this.”
