The British heavy metal legends have spent the last few months in the studio recording the follow-up to 2014’s “Redeemer Of Souls” with the band’s longtime collaborator Tom Allom, acclaimed British knob-twiddler Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, EXODUS, TESTAMENT, ACCEPT) and engineer Mike Exeter (BLACK SABBATH).

During an October 5 appearance on the “Trunk Nation” show on SiriusXM channel Volume, singer Rob Halford stated about the progress of the recording sessions for PRIEST‘s new disc: “We’re almost done. We’re in that final hurdle before we get to the finishing line. It is sounding monumental. It’s gonna blow your socks off. We’re thrilled. We’ve got this big metal monster looming in the background, about to drop early next year, with a world tour to coincide.”

Asked what it has been like collaborating again with Allom, who produced every PRIEST release from “Unleashed In The East” (1979) through “Ram It Down” (1988), along with several live records since then, Halford said: “Brilliant. Absolutely fantastic. Tom has a rich history with PRIEST, particularly those great moments with ‘Screaming For Vengeance’, ‘Defenders Of The Faith’ [and] ‘British Steel’. My God — he’s the man in that respect. So I thought it was really great for Andy Sneap and Mike Exeter to accept that this was gonna be like a three-man job, with Andy mostly holding the reins, but with Tom by his side and Mike there [as well].

“It’s an unusual way to make this kind of record for PRIEST, because it’s generally the producer and the band,” Halford admitted. “We just had so much faith in Andy and in Tom and Mike that we said, ‘Guys, you go for it. You tell us what to do.’ And if Andy Sneap said, ‘Do another take, Rob. Do another take, Rob. Do another take, Rob. ‘… I’ve never sung so much in the studio behind a mic in all my life. But he got the results that we needed, and I think I can say the same for Glenn [Tipton, guitar] and for Richie [Faulkner, guitar] and for Scott [Travis, drums] and for Ian [Hill, bass]. So he got something out of us — they all did — but they got something out of us truly remarkable, and you’re gonna be hearing it very soon.”

Sneap, who plays guitar in the reactivated British occult metal act HELL, recently told Serbia’s Hardwired magazine that PRIEST had “about twenty-six ideas” in the early stage of the production process for the new album. “We’ve whittled [that] down to fourteen or fifteen,” he said, adding that “we haven’t decided on which songs [will make the final cut] or a running order for the album yet.”

Andy went on to say that PRIEST‘s new album will contain “a really good energy and some real classic moments.” He said “Rob did great” during the album’s final recording sessions. “I’ll tell you what: for someone who’s got that much experience, there’s no ego there at all,” he said. “We’d do, like, six or seven passes, and I’d ask him to try something a bit [different] on this part, and he was, like, ‘No problem.’ And he’d give me another four takes with a slightly different vibe. And then me and Tom Allom would sit there and we’d comp it, and we pretty much agreed on everything.”

PRIEST was nominated for induction into the 2018 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, part of a list of nineteen potential candidates.

Inductees into the 2018 Rock Hall will be voted on by a group of more than nine hundred artists, historians and music-industry professionals.

The 2018 inductees will be announced in December and the induction ceremony will be held at Cleveland’s Public Auditorium on April 14, 2018.

JOE ELLIOTT’s DOWN ‘N’ OUTZ To Release ‘The Further Live Adventures Of …’ In December

DOWN ‘N’ OUTZ will release a brand new live album, “The Further Live Adventures Of …”, on December 1 via Frontiers Music Srl. The disc, recorded in Sheffield Corporation in December 2014, will be available 2CD/DVD, Blu-ray, vinyl and digital. In addition, on the same day, the band will reissue its previous records “My Re-Generation” and “The Further Adventures Of …” on CD, LP and digital.

The DOWN ‘N’ OUTZ is the project founded and fronted by DEF LEPPARD‘s Joe Elliott and backed by members of THE QUIREBOYS, WAYWARD SONS and RAW GLORY. The band pays tribute to rock legends MOTT THE HOOPLE and was established from the most unusual of circumstances. In the words of Joe Elliott: “When MOTT THE HOOPLE announced they were reforming for a week’s worth of shows at the Hammersmith Odeon, I was asked that I participate in some capacity. They’ve always been my favourite band and it’s nice to see the rest of the rock world finally catch up and give them their due.

“But, what was I to do? It was suggested to me that THE QUIREBOYS would be up for offering their services. This was perfect! A fan since their first album, I loved the idea of working with a band as enthusiastic to do this as I was. I decided that the thing to do was play some songs that like-minded people thought they would never hear live again, if ever, songs by spin offs of MOTT THE HOOPLE — songs by MOTT, Ian Hunter and BRITISH LIONS. Songs that are close to my heart, songs that I’ve played every week for the best part of thirty-five years on record, cassette, CD, iPod and now live.”

The DOWN ‘N OUTZ supported MOTT THE HOOPLE at one of their legendary 2009 reformation shows at Hammersmith Odeon. Following a rapturous reception, the one-night-project took on a life and energy of its own and an album project was born.

The band then decided to record an album, “My Re-Generation”, produced by Elliott and Ronan McHugh (DEF LEPPARD), which was recorded in Elliott‘s personal studio with basic tracking done at Moor Hall studio Bedfordshire by engineer Chris Corney. The album featured entirely covers of songs by artists related to MOTT THE HOOPLE, such as tracks by MOTT, BRITISH LIONS and Ian Hunter.

The band made an appearance at the 2010 High Voltage festival in the U.K., launched their own branded beer, and also announced it would be performing with Paul Rodgers in April 2011 as the opening act on the latter’s U.K. tour.

On April 21, 2014, DOWN ‘N’ OUTZ released their second studio album, “The Further Adventures Of…” Classic Rock wrote: “‘Further Adventures’ raises the bar for MOTT THE HOOPLE covers while giving timeless songs a new lease of life, as classics deserving of a new audience.”

In addition to Elliott (vocals, guitar, keyboards), the band features THE QUIREBOYSPaul Guerin (guitar), Guy Griffin (guitar), Keith Weir (keyboards), drummer Phil Martini (WAYWARD SONS) and bassist Share Ross (VIXEN).

ANTHRAX And KILLSWITCH ENGAGE To Mount Epic Sequel With ‘KillThrax II’

What do you do when you’ve co-headlined one of the hottest metal touring packages of 2017? Well, like any rock band that cares about its fans, you do it again, but you take it to the places that missed out the first time. And that’s exactly what metalcore masterminds KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and legendary thrash/metal masters ANTHRAX are announcing today — “KillThrax II”, a twenty-nine-city tour of North America presented by SiriusXM that kicks off January 25 in Montreal, Canada and will zig-zag across the continent to wind up in Portland, Maine on March 4. HAVOK will serve as the opening act for the entire tour.

Said ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello: “After playing so many amazing shows last year with our friends KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, I’m psyched for round two of ‘KillThrax’, and we’re adding HAVOK to the heaviness!!” Drummre Charlie Benante added: “The shows were great, the audiences were great, and we all felt great about the whole thing, so why not do it again?”

‘Evil Dead II’. ‘Dawn of the Dead’. ‘The Godfather: Part 2’. ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. All sequels that are better than the original. Add ‘KillThrax II’ to that list. Back by popular demand, ‘KillThrax’ is coming at ya again my friends,” said ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian.

“We are looking forward to the next leg of the ‘KillThrax’ tour,” said KILLSWITCH ENGAGE singer Jesse Leach. “We had a blast on the first one and we enjoyed sharing the stage with the humble legends ANTHRAX! There is such a synergy between the two bands and a certain unity that is infectious, so it was a no-brainer to put this package back together and hit the road. It’s an honor and we are excited for these shows, the fans, and the good times! ‘KillThrax’ is gearing up for round two, so let’s keep the party rolling!”

As with the inaugural “KillThrax” tour, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and ANTHRAX will rotate the show’s closing slot on “KillThrax II”. Fans can also expect a night of high energy, musical ferocity and sheer intensity, and what one reviewer called “an incredible night of live music with heavy hitters that provided hours of escape into metal bliss.”

PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS To Release ‘Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue’ Album In December

PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS, the project led by the former PANTERA and current DOWN/SUPERJOINT frontman, has set “Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” as the title of its second album, due in December via Anselmo‘s Housecore Records.

“Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is the follow-up to PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS‘ debut, “Walk Through Exits Only”, which came out in 2013 to mostly positive reviews.

In a 2014 interview Yahoo! Music, Anselmo said that the second ILLEGALS album would be “very different” from the debut. “I feel like every solo effort should be different,” he explained. “That’s a rule in my house under this particular roof. I don’t want to regurgitate a damn thing I’ve done in the past.

“Maybe I might touch on certain things, and in a lot of ways, there’s no getting around the voice because my voice is my voice,” he continued. “But you can express different musical influences from generations of music. I can do anything I want with THE ILLEGALS. It’s my band.”

“Walk Through Exits Only” sold around 8,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was produced by Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over a couple of years at Philip‘s New Orleans studio, Nodferatu’s Lair.

Back in October 2015, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS parted ways with guitarist Marzi Montazeri and replaced him with Mike DeLeon. Anselmo told Metal Underground about the split with Montazeri: “What I wanted to do with Marzi was jumpstart his career, which I did. He’s the type of guy that needs to be the focal point of pretty much anything he does. So he’s got that now and I’m happy for him. More power to him.”

Regarding how the addition of DeLeon came about, Anselmo said:”Mostly from his association with my drummer, Blue [José Manuel Gonzalez], and my other guitar player/bass player from SUPERJOINT, Steve [Stephen Taylor]. Steve Taylor was constantly saying, ‘DeLeon is the guy. DeLeon is the guy. He wants it the most! He wants it the most!’ I trust them. I trust their judgment. I trust their intuition. So far, every time DeLeon has come to jam, it has been serious grinding. He takes a good beating, man. He’s great. He’s a pleasure to work with.”

FIELDY To Release ‘Bassically’ Solo Album In November

KORN's FIELDY To Release 'Bassically' Solo Album In November

KORN bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu will release his long-awaited jazz fusion album titled “Bassically” on November 17. The seventeen-track disc was produced by Fieldy’s writing partner Anthony “Q” Quiles” and mixed by Chris Collier. The record features guest appearances by three of Fieldy‘s bandmates: drummer Ray Luzier plays drums, bongos, shaker, tambourine and djembe on the songs “Bass O Rama”, “Step Right Up”, “Basque K Cinco”, “Zibba Zibop” and “Mr. Bassmen”; guitarist Brian “Head” Welch plays on “I Wuv Bass Mon”; and singer Jonathan Davis does some beatboxing on “JD Fresh”.

“This is a bass album that encompasses the last nine years of my life on the road recording with a variety of special and unique basses,” Fieldy said. “This project features recordings of mine from dressing rooms, tour buses, hotel rooms and other unique locations playing on basses just as obscure as the locations. It’s a blend of funk, fusion, and rock. I can’t wait to share it with you.”

Asked what his inspirations were when writing “Bassically”, Fieldy told Weld For Birmingham in a 2016 interview: “To write it, my inspiration was probably my wife Dena. She was, like, ‘You should put a bass album out.’ And then I really thought about it. And if you go back in time to my inspiration in my early days, I listened to a lot of Stanley Clarke. And then from there on, I got into a lot of Flea. And I started really listening to some of these great bands — if you’re not listening for it, you don’t really know how great a lot of those bass players are unless you listen. For example, a lot of classic rock bands I listened to as a kid — now, I was like, ‘Wait, I just found the EAGLES on the bass, rippin’! Or LED ZEPPELIN! LED ZEPPELIN gets to rippin’ on bass! You hear these great tones that as a kid, I’d never really listened to. And now, I’m like starting to listen and trip out on it.”

Luzier told ABC News Radio back in 2013 that he found some inventive ways to create drum tracks for “Basically”. “I did some made-up percussion stuff, like we’d literally have a cup full of, like, change and seashells and I’d shake it,” he said. “And then… backstage [at a KORN show], we recorded a drum track, I pulled a floor tom off my kit and a snare and a hi-hat and it’s come out way better than we thought.”

“Bassically” track listing:

01. Bass O Rama
02. Charlie Brown
03. Step Right Up
04. Buck of Funk
05. Basque K Cinco
06. 15 String Exodus
07. JD Fresh
08. Zibba Zibop

12. 5 String Graffiti
13. Dance Your Bass Off

“Bassically” is available for preorder via PledgeMusic, where you can sample the songs “Bucket Of Funk”, “Bass O Rama” and “Zibba Zibop”.
