KORPIKLAANI Re-Signs With Nuclear Blast

KORPIKLAANI Re-Signs With NUCLEAR BLAST, Announces New AlbumFinnish folk metallers KORPIKLAANI have inked a new deal with Nuclear Blast for the release of their new album, “Notia”, due in May. Recorded at Petrax Studio with Aksu Hanttu producing, recording and mixing again, it is the band’s first CD to feature new accordion player Sami Perttula, who played a very active role in the folk arrangements along with fiddler Tuomas Rounakari.

Commented KORPIKLAANI bass player Jarkko Aaltonen: “‘Noita’, in the traditional Finnish meaning, is different than what people associate it with nowadays.

“‘Noita’ is a person with wider knowledge and understanding of the nature and who also was believed to possess paranormal or unnatural abilities. These people were often also referred to as Tietäjä, [which] exactly means someone with wider knowledge and understanding of pretty much everything.

“Native American medicine man is pretty much the same thing or actually all the different types of Shamans of the primitive peoples are the same thing. Noita is someone that you turn to when you need help of some kind.

“Finnish Noita had the ability to heal, just like their North American counterparts. They were very respected members of the society. Only later Christianity changed the word to mean something negative since those people were considered rivals by the church. Even in Finland, this turned into a witchhunt (=noitavaino) every now and then.

“Anyway, most people using Google Translate or similar will find the word ‘witch’ and will probably get a bit wrong idea of the meaning, since most will probably connect it with the black sabbaths, devil marks and such, when a way more correct translation would probably be medicine man or Shaman.”

Adds Pertulla: “Previously the KORPIKLAANI albums were played with a piano-accordion and now I play with a traditional button-accordion which was more widely used in Finland anyways. In the arrangements you can hear more tonal harmonies and folky accompaniments combined to the power-chords than before. It actually boosts up the uplifting feel of our music.”

KORPIKLAANI violinist Toumas Rounakari comments: “This album has more violin solos than ever before. Violin is more in the role of a lead-guitar now just as Jonne had originally intended it to be.”

KORPIKLAANI vocalist Jonne Järvelä concludes: “We have finally managed to create the balance between folk and metal in the way I’ve always dreamt it to be. Thanks to Sami‘s arrangements and Tuomas‘s crazy shredding of the violin.”

In March, KORPIKLAANI will headline the Paganfest extended shows and will additionally play a run of European festivals later this year.

STEVEN ADLER Celebrates 1 Year Of Sobriety

STEVEN ADLER Celebrates One Year Of Sobriety, Completes Work On New ADLER SongDiamond Dave Castagno conducted an interview with ADLER‘s Jacob Bunton and Johnny Martin at this year’s NAMM show, which was held January 22-25 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Speaking about ADLER‘s extended break following the cancelation of the band’s summer 2013 tour, Bunton said: “ADLER took a little hiatus. The band never broke up. We were all really close friends. We all are very close friends.”

He continued: “[Original GUNS N’ ROSES and current ADLER drummer] Steven [Adler], as everybody knows, we had a tour booked, and he had to cancel it to go deal with his health, because that’s the most important thing — him being healthy. But we’re happy to say, as of, I think, two weeks ago, he’s one year sober. So we all took some time off.”

Bunton also confirmed that ADLER recently returned to the studio with producer Jeff Pilson (FOREIGNER, DOKKEN) to record one new track, for which a release date has not yet been announced. He said: “We went back in the studio and did one song. [We’re] just kind of taking baby steps right now. The song is finished, but it’s gotta get mixed and mastered. But I don’t know if we’re planning on doing just that song, or doing an EP, or doing a record, or doing whatever. We are gonna do some shows — not a big tour and stuff like that, because, you know, we’re just gonna see how it goes.”

ADLER‘s debut album, “Back From The Dead”, came out in November 2012 via New Ocean Media.

Adler appeared on season two of on the “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew” show and the first season of the spin-off program “Sober House” back in late 2008 and early 2009. Adler then went on to stints in real rehab centers after being ordered to by a judge as part of a DUI bust. He subsequently returned for Season 5 of “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew” alongside Michael Lohan, Dwight Gooden and Bai Ling, among others.

“Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House” included footage of Adler being arrested on July 18, 2008 after he showed up at a sober-living home high and in possession of heroin.

Steven Adler was the drummer for GUNS N’ ROSES from 1985 to 1990. He was eventually fired from the band due to his drug addiction, which caused him to spiral down into depression and more drug use.

Steven Adler‘s autobiography, “My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, and Drugs, and Guns N’ Roses”, came out in July 2010. In the book, Adler told all, fearlessly addressing his struggles with heroin and crack addiction; his financial ruin after being kicked out of GN’R; his shattered marriage; and the severe health problems that nearly claimed his life on several occasions.

ADLER is comprised of Adler, frontman Jacob Bunton (LYNAM, MARS ELECTRIC), guitarist Lonny Paul (ADLER’S APPETITE), and bassist Johnny Martin (CHELSEA SMILES).

GUNS N’ ROSES was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012. Adler, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan attended the ceremony, while singer Axl Rose and founding guitarist Izzy Stradlin stayed home.

RICHIE KOTZEN Hopes To Begin Recording 2nd THE WINERY DOGS Album In May

RICHIE KOTZEN Hopes To Begin Recording Second THE WINERY DOGS Album In May

MusicStoreLive.com conducted an interview with Richie Kotzen (THE WINERY DOGS) at this year’s NAMM show, which was held January 22-25 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Asked about the status of THE WINERY DOGS, Kotzen responded: “We are working on new songs. I just released a solo record, two weeks ago, called ‘Cannibals’, so that’s out now. And then, I would think that, in a perfect world, we will start recording the next WINERY DOGS record in May, and hopefully have that out by the end of summer and get back out on the road. That’s the goal.”

Kotzen also spoke about the upcoming second installment of THE WINERY DOGS“Dog Camp”, an immersive program for aspiring musicians of all ages and levels, which is set for this coming July at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York.

“Yeah, we have this thing we did last year called ‘Dog Camp’, which people can sign up and hang out with us up in the woods of New York, so it’s pretty fun,” he said. “And we’re doing it again this summer, so I’m looking forward to that as well.”

Kotzen was asked by GetYourRockOut last year whether he felt any pressure trying to follow up the success of THE WINERY DOGS‘ self-titled debut album as the group prepared to begin work on its sophomore CD. “Personally, no,” Richie said. “With music, I’m one of those people that, like… I don’t think about anything other that doing what feels right to me. I mean, I probably could have put myself in situations where a lot more people would know about me, but I don’t, because I don’t wanna play music that I don’t wanna play. I learned that in the past. And so either, personally, I’ll play music that I wanna play, that I believe in, or I won’t play music at all. And I’ve done that; that’s me. And I think the other guys [in THE WINERY DOGS], I won’t speak for them, but making a record with them, and knowing them as well as I do now, I don’t think THE WINERY DOGS would make a record that the three of us would put out that we all didn’t love.”

He continued: “Once you start looking at music like a math equation and you start making choices that are outside the realm of creativity, you put yourself in a situation for a lot of emotional failure. And when you are there, then the music is meaningless and everything suffers and then things fall apart. So, I think, whatever we do, we’ll do what feels natural and what the three of us can get behind. Even in the decision-making process, if I make a suggestion and one of the other guys loves it, but the other guy doesn’t, we don’t do it. We don’t move unless all three of us agree to move. And then that way, once you’re in a position, at least you know all three of us decided to go here; it’s not like we were drug here by… you know what I’m trying to say?! By someone that didn’t wanna go there.”

Asked if THE WINERY DOGS will make a conscious effort to create a second album that will be stylistically similar to the debut, Richie said: “I don’t think in those terms. We’re gonna write what we we’re gonna write. We’re gonna get in a room and we’re gonna do what we did last time. Mike‘s gonna play a drum beat, I’m gonna sing a chorus idea and Billy‘s gonna play a bass thing, and we’re gonna jam on it and manipulate it and write to it. And it’s gonna be what it’s gonna be, because, like I said, music isn’t math to me; music is something that you feel, that comes from creativity.”
