BLACK STAR RIDERS To Release ‘Heavy Fire’ Album

BLACK STAR RIDERS will hit the road next year with a comprehensive U.K. tour in support of their new album, “Heavy Fire”, set for release in early 2017.

After a full year off the road, BLACK STAR RIDERSRicky Warwick, Scott Gorham, Damon Johnson, Robert Crane and Jimmy DeGrasso — are back with a 16-date U.K. and Ireland run, joined on the first five dates by Scottish rockers GUN and THE AMORETTES and then Sweden’s own BACKYARD BABIES with GUN on the remaining 11 shows.

States Warwick: “It seems like ages since we did the DEF LEPPARD / WHITESNAKE tour, so we are all really looking forward to be back out on the road with BLACK STAR RIDERS. Our third album will be out just prior to the dates, so it’s going to be great to play tracks from that along with favorites from the first two records also. Having my old friends from BACKYARD BABIES, GUN and THE AMORETTES out with us too is just icing on the cake to make a great tour!”

BLACK STAR RIDERS is currently in the studio in Nashville, once again with producer Nick Raskulinecz, putting the finishing touches to “Heavy Fire”. Gorham says: “It’s great to be back with Nick. After such a great job on ‘The Killer Instinct’, it was a no-brainer to continue the relationship and this album is going to blow everyone away.”

Following on from their critically acclaimed albums “All Hell Breaks Loose” and “The Killer Instinct”, which have paved the way for BLACK STAR RIDERS to be recognized as a power force in the modern day of rock ‘n’ roll, “Heavy Fire” will be once again released by Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The band has also brought in PledgeMusic, one of the most innovative and successful platforms of the modern music world, to give fans extra special product and experiences to go along with the album’s release.

BLACK STAR RIDERS was born in December 2012 when members of the legendary THIN LIZZY decided to write and perform new music under a new name out of respect for the late Phil Lynott.

More ‘Trinity’ Tour Details Revealed

GEOFF TATE, TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS, BLAZE BAYLEY: More 'Trinity' Tour Details Revealed

Come November, heavy metal fans in at least eight East Coast cities will be in for a night full of hell-raising fun as three of the genre’s finest vocalists — Geoff Tate, Tim “Ripper” Owens and Blaze Bayley — will be performing the hits from their respective bands on stage together for what is hoped to be just the beginning of several dates over the next few months.

Geoff Tate, whose OPERATION: MINDCRIME will release their second CD in September, titled “Resurrection”, states that the collaboration between the three singers first came about while recently in the studio. “We were recording a song together that will appear on the new OPERATION: MINDCRIME album called ‘Taking On The World’ and immediately realized just how much fun it would be if we went out and did a couple of dates together,” he says. “We want to give fans a great selection of hits and rarities along with songs we just enjoy performing… and the ‘Trinity’ tour was born!”

The three vocalists will be backed by the same group of excellent musicians throughout the evening in a show that promises to be loaded with memorable metal for the music masses to enjoy.

Fans can expect to hear such songs as “Empire”, “I Don’t Believe In Love”, “Eyes Of A Stranger”, “Living After Midnight”, “Breaking The Law”, “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”, “Burn In Hell”, “Man On The Edge”, “The Number Of The Beast” and “Run To The Hills”, among others.

During his illustrious career, Tate has sold more than 25 million records at the helm of QUEENSRŸCHE, the band he fronted for 30 years from their inception through 2012, earning three Grammy nominations, five MTV Music Video Award nominations, and one MTV Music Video Award along the way. The landmark concept album “Operation: Mindcrime” thrust Tate‘s unique social consciousness, style and expertly crafted lyrics into the national spotlight in 1988, and was followed by “Empire” in 1990, the album that delivered QUEENSRŸCHE to arena-headlining status and sold more than three million albums on the back of hit singles and radio staples “Silent Lucidity” and “Jet City Woman”. By the time the band released “Promised Land” in 1994, Tate was universally acknowledged as one of the greatest frontmen in rock and metal, and a driving force behind one of the most innovative bands in mainstream music. In September of 2015, his new band, OPERATION: MINDCRIME released its debut effort, titled “The Key”, which examined what one might do if they discovered “the key” to changing the way we view the world, the way we look at time, the way we travel and could essentially change the human condition… for better or for release. The band successfully toured for months in support of the project and looks forward to their forthcoming release, “Resurrection”, this September.

Owens first gained worldwide attention and acclaim when he joined JUDAS PRIEST as their lead singer in 1996. During his stint with PRIEST, he recorded two studio albums and two live albums. The song “Bullet Train” — which featured his incredible vocals — was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999 in the category of “Best Metal Performance.” He subsequently went on to join ICED EARTH and has performed with such bands as BEYOND FEAR, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN’S RISING FORCE and CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED.

Bayley joined IRON MAIDEN in 1993 after the departure of Bruce Dickinson and remained the band’s singer until Dickinson‘s return in 1999. Bayley, who had started his career in the mid-’80s as the vocalist of WOLFSBANE, recorded two albums with IRON MAIDEN before starting his own band, BLAZE. In May of 2000, the band would release their debut album, titled “Silicon Messiah”, and would go on to put out two other albums. In more recent years, he’s concentrated on solo projects.

MASTODON To Enter Studio In October Or November

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON will enter the studio in the fall to begin recording their seventh album. Guitarist Bill Kelliher told about the writing sessions for the follow-up to 2014’s “Once More ‘Round The Sun”: “Me personally, I’ve put together about eleven songs in my own studio, myself, just in my down time. Once we get home from this [European] tour, we’re all gonna try to get in and hone in on it and put it into each other’s hands so everyone can kind of make it a MASTODON record.”

He continued: “With the eleven songs that we’ve recorded so far, it’s mostly been Brann [Dailor, drums] and myself. I mean, he lives down the street from me, we grew up together and we write together.

“Once we get home, we’re gonna just pick up where we left off. But we’re pretty well ahead of the curve. Like I said, there’s about eleven, twelve solid ideas, full songs that are there with vocals and everything. It’s just a matter of finetuning [them] and cutting pieces outta here and there.”

Kelliher added that MASTODON is hoping to enter the studio pretty quickly in order to capture the vibe of the new material.

“Our plan right now is to start recording in October, November,” he said. “So pretty soon. We’ve gotta keep it fresh. You write something, if you let it sit too long, if it’s not completed and recorded… It’s not as fresh as when you first come up with the ideas and you record it right away, because that’s when you really hit the nail in the head.”

Earlier this month, Dailor said that MASTODON‘s next album would likely be “more proggy” than its predecessor. He said: “It sounds like MASTODON to me but an updated version. We always try to push to hear something new and hear something different, so that’s what’s going on.

“It’s impossible to tell somebody what something sounds like, so I’ll spare the details. But so far so good — we go with what we know, play what we like, and if we don’t like it, we don’t play it.”

The last show of MASTODON‘s European tour will take place tonight (Tuesday, August 30) in Athens, Greece.

OVERKILL & NILE Join Forces For U.S. Tour

OVERKILL and NILE will join forces for a U.S. tour in February/March 2017. AMORPHIS will also play a couple of shows toward the end of the trek, but will not be part of the OVERKILL/NILE tour. Exact cities and dates will be announced soon.

OVERKILL has set “Grinding Wheel” as the title of its new album, due this fall via Nuclear Blast. Vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth told Alternative Nation about the follow-up to 2014’s “White Devil Armory”: “I was just adjusting the lyrics for our upcoming album. We are inches from completion at this point. Just a few more guitar leads need to be done and a few more backing vocals need to be done. The majority of the tracks are finished. We are looking for a first-week-of-November release.”
Asked how the new OVERKILL album will compare to the previous ones, Blitz said: “At the end of the day, OVERKILL is OVERKILL. Our trademark is that we are always recognizable on every release. For the three decades we have been around, we were always OVERKILL. So, sure, it is a metal record, and like always, it will have sort of a thrash vibe to it with some melody in it.”

He continued: “It’s always best to try to make it better, or at least think in your mind that it is going to be better. That becomes the challenge. I think that is what keeps the band rolling.

“A lot of bands are known for what they have done, but I feel being known for where you are and what you are doing is where true value lies. I feel we accomplished that on the last few albums.”

NILE’s latest album, “What Should Not Be Unearthed”, was released in August 2015 via Nuclear Blast. Produced by NILE and mixed by Neil Kernon, the CD’s artwork was handled this time by Michal “Xaay” Loranc.

OBITUARY To Release ‘Ten Thousand Ways To Die’ Single In October

Florida-based death metal veterans OBITUARY have announced “Ten Thousand Ways To Die”, a special two-song single containing a pair of brand new studio tracks plus a bonus live set of twelve classics and fan favorites from the band’s storied catalog. Recorded in eleven different cities during the band’s highly successful 2015 “Inked In Blood” world tour, the live tracks capture the incredible performances of a band that has stood atop the death metal pantheon for almost 30 years.

“Ten Thousand Ways To Die” will be released worldwide on October 21 on CD and digital formats and is sure to satisfy new and die-hard OBITUARY fans and will quench the bloodthirst of listeners until the band’s new album drops in spring 2017.

Listen to the new single “Loathe” below.

Commented the band: “We are very excited about the live songs that we recorded on this last U.S. tour. Joe Cincotta from Full Force Studio is also our live sound engineer and he had his full recording rig on the road with us so we took advantage of the opportunity and recorded the show every night. The quality was amazing so we decided to include this as part of the ‘Ten Thousand Ways to Die’ release to give the fans a little OB bonus! We selected songs from different cities so you will hear the sound difference between each song. Nothing was done to the songs after the live performance recording so it gives you the real, true, unedited ‘live show’ sound and feeling that the fans experienced at each show.”

OBITUARY will return to Europe as part of the colossal “Battle Of The Bays” European tour in October / November 2016 alongside San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal veterans EXODUS. Support will come from influential groove crossover metallers PRONG and Australian wrecking machine KING PARROT.

OBITUARY‘s ninth studio album, “Inked In Blood”, sold around 5,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 75 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The band’s first full-length CD in over five years, “Inked In Blood” was recorded by OBITUARY in April 2014 at the group’s own RedNeck Studio in Gibsonton, Florida.

In an interview with, Laiho spoke about the recent addition of touring guitarist Daniel Freyberg (NAILDOWN, NORTHER) to CHILDREN OF BODOM‘s lineup. He said: “I’ve actually known him for over ten years. He’s played in a couple bands so I always knew he could play guitar. When we started looking for a new member, or at least somebody to do the shows with, we tried out a couple guys who didn’t live in Finland and it didn’t work out and this guy, he was right there and he just informally brought it up, like, ‘Hey, if you guys need any help, let me know.’ I hadn’t heard him play in a while, so I had him send me a video with a couple of riffs to see if he could still play, and he rocks. He’s a hard-working dude. He’s a quick learner, and so far it’s been awesome. But the thing is, we haven’t really decided if we’re going to have him as a permanent member or not. We’re still not sure what’s going to happen for sure.”

Laiho added that there is a lot more to being in a band than just playing ability.

“When you think about it, the playing part is such a small part of being in a band because the playing should be there no matter what,” he said. “Being in a band is more about having people you get along with. We’re the kind of band who is constantly on the road, so you do basically live with each other so it’s super important that we get along. If there’s one guy that bums another guy out, it can be pretty destructive. I’ve seen that happen to so many bands, and I don’t want that around.”

CHILDREN OF BODOM in May 2015 announced the departure of the band’s guitarist of ten years, Roope Latvala. Laiho told Artisan News about Roope‘s exit from the group: “We were at a phase where we wanted to, sort of, have a new beginning and reinvent ourselves, on a certain level. And everybody — all four of us — were pushing it harder and putting more effort on the band and just working extra, extra hard. And he wasn’t quite there with us, you know, as far as the level of work ethics and, you know, stuff like that. So we felt like everyone’s better off if we part ways at this point, and that’s what happened. And, yeah, it [happened] three days before we hit the studio [to record the new CHILDREN OF BODOM album, ‘I Worship Chaos’], but it was not… I mean, it was something that everybody was sort of anticipating already. And I had… To be honest, I had decided, a month or so before that, that I was gonna do all the guitars on the album. Because, like I said, it wasn’t just working out with him.”

He continued: “I don’t wanna talk shit or anything; it’s just that that happens. It’s life. And you can’t dwell on it. It sucks. It really does, man. He was around for twelve years, and, for us, the band, it really is a family, and losing a member, it’s a big deal for us. ‘Cause we’re not the type of band [where] we change members every other week. But, you know, you’ve gotta move on. And that’s that, really.”

CHILDREN OF BODOM last year recruited Antti Wirman, the younger brother of the band’s keyboardist Janne Wirman, to handle second-guitar duties for some of their shows.
