The New First Daughter Of New York City Is A Metalhead

According to Teen Vogue, Chiara de Blasio, the 19-year-old college sophomore whose dad, Bill de Blasio, was elected mayor of New York City last month, is a metalhead. “Old-school metal, thrash metal, death metal, the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal,” she said about her music of choice. “In terms of more modern stuff, I’ve gotten into Scandinavian, folk, and Viking metal. Dante [Chiara‘s 16-year-old brother] loves metal now too, thanks to me.”

In a Christmas Eve video, Chiara opened up about her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, saying that she sought treatment for depression and substance abuse. The clip, which was made by de Blasio campaign strategist and ad maker John Del Cecato, can be seen below.

“Since it was released, people all over the country, people all over the world, have responded to it,” Bill de Blasio told the New York Daily News. “I have been so gratified by particularly parents who have talked about why it meant a lot to them to have a strong young person talk about her struggle openly.”

Chiara told Teen Vogue that she is not on social media.

“I think technology in general has brought a lot of positive things, but it’s preventing people from really being in the moment, living the lives they would otherwise be living,” she said.

DOWN Completes Work On New EP

DOWN has completed work on its new EP for an early 2014 release. The CD was recorded at singer Philip Anselmo‘s New Orleans studio, Nodferatu’s Lair and is the second in a series of EPs to be released over the next few years, each touching on a different aspect of the band’s sound.

Speaking about the band’s new material, DOWN guitarist Pepper Keenan told the “Metal Hammer” radio show: “It’s kind of slight continuation of the first EP, but it’s a little bit more… It’s hard to say, man… It’s more… I wouldn’t say ‘aggressive,’ but it’s definitely got some freaky guitar stuff on it. And it’s definitely got a pretty good groove factor. And we spent a lot of time trying to make all the songs [fit together stylistically]. We had several songs that didn’t quite match it, so we kind of [set them aside] and we’re gonna move them to another EP. But it’s got a super-heavy vibe to it, man. I mean, I’m really excited about it. Everybody in the band is excited about it.”

He continued: “We wrote it kind of like we did the ‘NOLA’ record. Each one of us had some riffs and we got in a room and we just hashed it out like the old days — just going off each person’s experiences and ideas. Everybody’s ideas were valid, and it really ended up being well rounded and slamming. It was [a] very creative [process], let’s put it that way. Actually, it was surprising some of us how much we really still got it.”

Pepper also spoke about the cover theme for the next DOWN EP and how it will be connected to last year’s “Down IV Part I – The Purple EP”.

“When the second [EP] comes out, you’ll see it as being an extension of the last cover,” Pepper said. “So number 2 is gonna connect sideways to number 1, and you’ll start to see a morphing kind of process. There’s some kind of liquid light kind of thing that’s kind of melding across as you go… I hate to quote the overall color, but I believe it’s something like orange. I haven’t looked at it in a while. It might not be orange yet, but it’s heading in that direction.”

Released in September 2012, “Down IV Part I – The Purple EP” sold 12,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Guitarist Kirk Windstein recently left DOWN and was replaced by Bobby Landgraf, the band’s former guitar tech who was previously in GAHDZILLA MOTOR COMPANY, a 1990s outfit also featuring Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYSWATCHTOWER), and HONKY.

“I couldn’t feel more blessed,” Landgraf, 48, said in an interview. “Phil could’ve gotten anyone to play guitar, but I’ve been jamming with them during soundchecks, so they know we can play together.”

“It’s really a dream come true,” added Landgraf. “It’s what you’re working for all those years.”

SLASH: 16 New Songs ‘Worked Up And Completed’ For Third Solo Album

Slash and his solo band, MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS, are back in the studio to record the third album under the solo Slash banner. The legendary guitarist has offered some updates on Twitter as the band gets to work on the follow-up to 2012’s “Apocalyptic Love”, saying earlier today (Thursday, December 19), “16 tracks worked up and completed. plus an instrumental? Hard to decide what goes on the record, what will be bonus tracks. It’s all cool.” He previously stated about the upcoming CD: “Going to be a heavy record.”

The former GUNS N’ ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER axeman began this chapter of his career back in 2010 with his self-titled solo debut.
That album was recorded with a number of guest musicians and vocalists, including ALTER BRIDGE‘s Myles Kennedy. The latter first joined Slash as his touring vocalist, then became the permanent singer starting with “Apocalyptic Love”.

Slash told The Pulse Of Radio that the partnership with Kennedy seemed natural from the start. “We work really well together,” he said. “I never really thought about how that’s progressing. It’s real natural. So it’s like any kind of sort of close relationship, where I think we established it really, really early on and now we’re just sort of doing our thing, you know. Yeah, I don’t know what else to say — it’s just a really cool kind of synergy that we’ve got.”

Kennedy and ALTER BRIDGE released their fourth album, “Fortress”, earlier this fall and will hit the road in early 2014.

Slash also recently launched a second career as a movie producer, with his Slasher Films production company issuing its first release, called “Nothing Left To Fear”, in October.

MEGADETH To Enter Studio Next Summer

Rooster of 94.5 FMX‘s “The Wrecking Yard” in Lubbock, Texas recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. You can now listen to the chat at

Speaking about MEGADETH‘s plans for a new studio album, Mustaine said: “We right now have a bunch of dates that’s gonna take us up until August of next year. That’s when we start recording the next record. We’ve already started working on writing stuff…

“Sometimes we’ve been forced to really kind of write on the spot. Right now we’ve got an amazing luxury to be able to take some time.

“Besides doing a lot of interesting things, the other guys in the band, I’ve got a performance coming up in April with the San Diego Symphony. And just interesting stuff like that.

“We’re trying to go a little bit out of our comfort zone while we’re near the end of this cycle, because we wanna make sure that we really experience as much as we can.”

He continued: “Life is what you make it, man. And we really, really enjoy what we’re doing right now. I mean, we’re not in it for anything other than just the love of playing music and looking at the smiles on your faces. That’s, to me, the biggest reward. Because if you’ve got a roof over your head and your kids are healthy, then you’re very wealthy. And if you’ve got enough friends to count on one hand, then you’re a really blessed person. I’ve had a great life and I love playing for our fans.”

MEGADETH‘s tour with FEAR FACTORY and NONPOINT kicked off on November 23 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

MEGADETH‘s latest album, “Super Collider”, has sold more than 70,000 copies in the United States since its June 4 release. The CD arrived in stores via Mustaine‘s new label, Tradecraft, distributed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe).

Image spoke to KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons about the band’s upcoming induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Asked what lineup of the band is going to play at the induction ceremony, Simmons replied: “Well, KISS is Tommy ThayerEric SingerPaul Stanley and Gene Simmons. It’s like, if you introduced me to your wife and I go, ‘Wait, where are all the other wives?’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, I was married to them and now I’m here.’ You can argue that point and we’ll figure everything out as time goes on. This one is for the fans. If the fans didn’t care, we wouldn’t be here. If it meant nothing to them, we wouldn’t be here.”

Regarding whether he is open to the idea of playing with Peter Criss and Ace Frehley that night, Simmons said: “Sure, why not?… They were equally important in the formation of the band. When you have kids with your first wife, you give kudos. The fact you got remarried doesn’t delete or minimize the important. Hey, ‘You have gave birth to this thing, KISS, with AcePeterPaul and Gene.'”

When The Pulse Of Radio last caught up with Paul Stanley, they posed the question as to what members of KISS should be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame should the band finally be voted in. “Well, that’s a really good question,” he replied. “We would — y’know, it obviously would be something to think about if and when it happened. There’ve been a lot of people who have been a part of this — some longer than others, some adding less than others, and some who deserve recognition more than others. So, it would be something to think about.”

He told earlier today: “Peter and Ace are undeniably at the beginning of the band, and we built a foundation which has stood the test of time and has allowed us to build a monument for 40 years, so today I wholeheartedly embrace and acknowledge Peter and Ace and, likewise, a lot of people who have been in the band and also standing by the band — and that includes the fans. But the idea of misleading or giving anybody a sense that we would ever go back to that [original lineup] situation is totally off the table. We’ve done that and, with all respect, it crashed for very similar reasons both times and things have moved on. I say without any animosity and with all respect that we wouldn’t be here without what Peter and Ace contributed, and we wouldn’t be here with them today.”

SCREAM ARENA Signs Record, Publishing Deals

British hard rock act SCREAM ARENA has signed a worldwide licensing deal with the Danish label Mighty Music / Target Group. In addition, SCREAM ARENA frontman Andy Paul has inked a publishing deal with Once Bitten Music, administered worldwide by Notting Hill Music and in Japan by Sony Music Publishing.

Andy says: “It has been a bit of a long highway to get to this point but thanks to the belief of Dave Tedder at Head First Entertainment and Michael Andersen and the staff at TargetSCREAM ARENA can really launch in 2014.

“The lineup has changed along the way but now SCREAM ARENA is where it should be; Aside from myself, we now have lead guitarist Phil O’Dea who was an integral part of BIG GUNS, who were part of the U.K. rock scene causing a great impression in Japan in the mid-to-late 1990s, bass player, Lincoln J Roth is a go to man from the Billy Sheehan/Marcel Jacob school of playing, drummer Mick Maleckjy sits in the pocket and hits the spot, while rhythm guitarist Alex Mullings brings taste and drive to the menu. I think we’re ready to do a bit of damage out there.”

SCREAM ARENA‘s self titled debut will be made available in the spring. The band is in the planning stages of a full-scale European tour in support of the release.
